The Essential Estate Summary

A companion document to your Will, the Essential Estate Summary is designed to provide your Executor with the detail they will need to navigate and finalise your Estate.

All too often Executors are left with random hand written notes or are reliant on the recollections of family members in trying to piece together the complex details of an Estate. This can be an enourmous amount of work and stress on top of their already busy life, and at a time when they may still be grieving.

Save your family unnecessary stress at an already difficult time. The Essential Estate Summary helps you leave a road map to your affairs so your executor has the information they need to manage your estate and honour your wishes.

What does the Essential Estate Summary record?

Location of documents

Record the locations of your key documents and how to access them. Some could be stored in your home, with your lawyer, or in a safe deposit box. Let your Executor know where they can find them.

Financial Information

Record the details of your bank accounts, investments, pensions, tax information, along with your key advisors - accountant, lawyer, financial or investment advisor. Enable your Executor to start the process of accessing funds to meet your immediate bills which will continue to fall due.

Real estate and other assets

Record details relating to your primary residence, investment properties, vehicles and other significant assets or collectibles, so your Executor can locate and secure them as necessary.

Insurances

Record the details of insurance policies protecting you and your assets so your Executor can arrange refunds or maintain them until your assets are disposed of, or transferred.

Your digital life

Record your digital account details such as email, social media, subscriptions and streaming services.

Pet information

Record key details relating to your pets for the benefit of whoever is responsible for the continuity of their care.

Funeral arrangements

An opportunity for you to record your thoughts/preferences on various aspects of your funeral - funeral plan particulars and persons you would like notified of your passing who may be unfamiliar to your family.

Why is recording this important?

Most people make at least one Will during their lifetime and often they choose to appoint a family member as their Executor.

Your Will documents how your estate will be distributed, but it doesn't tell the whole story. There are many other aspects of your life, not detailed in your Will, that your family will need to deal with after your death.

A rich life has many elements that need to be finalised and these can be complex, both administratively and emotionally. Providing information and guidance can simplify this for your executor and provide reassurance they are honouring your wishes.

Your family won't be prepared for your death. And even less so to deal with the life admin that you'll leave behind.

Completing an Essential Estate Summary is an opportunity to provide your family with guidance and remove any doubt about your intentions. They will appreciate and benefit from the notes you leave, which will help simplify the estate administration task.

And if your family choose to seek the help of a lawyer in completing the estate administration, the information in your Essential Estate Summary should help speed the process and save on 'time-based' lawyer fees.

Help your executor deal with...

Your funeral

There are a lot of decisions relating to your funeral that will need to be made quickly, even if you have arranged a pre-paid funeral. Will they be prepared for this?

Your finances

Detail the institutions you deal with for your bank accounts, term deposits, pension, superannuation, share holdings and other investments, saving them the run around.

Your 'life administration'

Our lives are complicated by all sorts of accounts and electronic devices. Leave details enabling them to access and deal with your email, mobile phone, social media accounts, subscriptions and service provider contact information?

As an Executor, dealing with all these things at once, on top of our own life and whilst dealing with grief - it can feel overwhelming.

The Essential Estate Summary offers a simple guided format to collating your information to remove the guess work for your Executor and provide direction to reduce stress and worry. Once complete it can be stored securely with your Will and other end-of-life documents, so the information is safe, but readily available when needed.

  • For years I used to think "I really should find a way to record all those life details in my head". I eventually created a dodgy spreadsheet with a few important usernames and passwords, and that's as far as I got.

Then I discovered the Essential Estate Summary, which provided a more comprehensive way to record all the stuff my family would need to understand my life matrix and dismantle my digital profile. It is tucked away with my Will where no one will find it till after I am gone.
